On Friday December 19th, 15 volunteers from UCS wrapped gifts at Chancellor Avenue School holiday bazaar. The gym was transformed into a hall for shopping, playing games and eating, and students shopped for their families and sometimes themselves with monopoly money earned through academic achievements and good behavior. All the gifts were donated (some by our members). They were all excited to be buying gifts for loved ones and having them wrapped beautifully and that enthusiasm was definitely infectious. Even though we had to wrap at a frantic pace at times, we all agreed that it was really fun and rewarding experience to see happy and excited face of the students.
Tutoring at Chancellor is set to begin on Saturday January 10th from 9am-12pm and continue for 18 Saturdays. With a new leader in place, there will be a change in the way Saturday tutoring session have been conducted. In the past, tutors worked to prepare the students for NJ Ask testing but Principal Jackson doesn’t believe in teaching to testing. He envisions dividing students into different levels and providing each group with reinforcement they need. Some students will be receiving individualized attention and some will be taught in classroom settings. We’d like to organize tutoring sessions so that each volunteer commits to one Saturday per month. Of course, you are welcome to sign up more often if you wish. This is a great volunteer opportunity for youth group, as the students really enjoy working with young adults. It will surely be a rewarding experience.
