The UCS plate collection in the Sunday services of 1/25, 2/1, 2/8 and 2/15 will go to support our Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office http://www.uua.org/international/un/ and will specifically target support for that office’s work on international on gay lesbian, transgender and bisexual issues.
In this work our United Nations Office is addressing criminalization of sexuality, sexual acts, gender identity, and gender expression. Discriminatory laws subject lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in over 80 countries around the world to harassment, extortion, blackmail, incarceration, and even the possibility of capital punishment or extra-judicial murder with impunity. Our United Nations office consistently raises this as a human rights issue at the UN and related international conferences and gatherings – and is being heard.
Our United Nations office also partners with a variety of organizations to work to help people who flee here to North America from other parts of the world because of persecution in their home country based on their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. This work of our UN office and its allies with these refugees involves everything from working on the simple necessities of housing and food to helping these refugees in seeking asylum.
Bruce Knotts, Executive Director of our United Nations Office will be here on February 15 after the second service to talk about all the work of our United Nations Office. Please join us on Feb. 15 for lunch and Bruce’s talk. There will be child care.
