Why hasn’t the congregation seen this great new plan yet? Although the Team had hoped to have our design on view before summer vacations began, we needed to take a pause. New challenges are confronting UCS as we plan for the expansion of our facilities. As we all learned at the budget presentation and the annual meeting, the current transition period is bringing some serious financial challenges to the operating budget. That budget is entirely separate from funds dedicated to capital expansion. However, for the next two or three years UCS will need to rely on the rental income from the business and apartment spaces in the Dangler property to help us meet our operating expenses.
In order to expand, we obviously need access to the next door property. It is not clear when that property will be available since we are currently seeking a new business tenant and the length of the lease will need to be negotiated. While this forced delay is a disappointment, we can certainly turn it to our advantage. Our new Minister of Worship and Outreach will begin serving sometime in the coming year and will be able to join us in our vision for a larger home. The postponement also provides an excellent opportunity for us to raise a robust building fund.
The Facilities Team and the Board of Trustees needed time to consider these circumstances and share them with the entire congregation. We now have a firm date for presenting the outstanding ikon.5 design to everyone. Please mark your calendar for Sunday, September 20th. After each service our architects, Joe Tattoni and Arvind Tikku, will unveil floor plans, drawings, and a wonderful model showing in detail the beautiful proposed expansion. These presentations will launch a discussion period of several weeks as the Facilities Team listens to your responses and suggestions. Despite the challenges, the Team is confident that together we will see this dream become a reality.
