Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Summit presents
A Book Discussion and Potluck Lunch
Waking Up White
Sunday January 21 from 1pm – 3pm
Beacon Fellowship Hall – Summit – 4 Waldron Ave. Summit
Join us for a discussion of Debby Irving’s book Waking Up White. Raised in a place very similar to Summit, Debby describes her journey of awaking to the realities of race in America. This will be a great discussion for those who are just beginning the process of waking up to the idea of white privilege, as well as for those who are further along in the journey.
“Debby Irving’s powerful Waking Up White opens a rare window on how white Americans are socialized. Irving’s focus on the mechanics of racism operating in just one life — her own — may lead white readers to reconsider the roots of their own perspectives — and their role in dismantling old myths. Readers of color will no doubt find the view through Irving’s window fascinating, and telling.” – Van Jones
The book discussion will be facilitated by Beacon and Fountain Baptist for a unique perspective from both ends of the race continuum. For more information about the author, visit http://www.debbyirving.com/
