Plans are moving ahead for next fall’s All Souls Day trip to our partner Unitarian Church in Barót, Transylvania (Romania). Members and friends are welcome to join in.
As part of the seven-day pilgrimage, Beacon travelers will participate in All Souls Day traditions with Unitarian families as well as get to know the town of Barót and several surrounding villages. The proposed itinerary runs from Monday, October 29, to Monday, November 5.
In Transylvania and in many parts of Europe, All Souls Day, November 1, is a reunion holiday similar to our Thanksgiving, where people return to their ancestral villages from cities where they may have moved for jobs. On the trip, we will accompany Unitarian families to the cemeteries in late afternoon, where they place flowers and light candles by the graves of deceased relatives and then return to town for dinners with family and friends.
While in Barót, travelers from Beacon can choose between lodging in a bed & breakfast or in the homes of Barót members. The last night, Sunday, Nov. 4, folks will stay in a motel conveniently near the Otopeni Airport in Bucharest for return flights the next day.
The estimated cost for the trip, $850, includes all meals, overnights and transportation, except for airfare to and from Otopeni Airport in Bucharest. Airfare generally averages about $1,200 round trip.
So far, Rev. Robin and three other Beacon members plan to join the trip. Details of the tentative itinerary can be found here. The deadline for applications is September 1.
