All Souls Day Trip
Oct. 29-Nov. 6
There’s still time to participate in this fall’s All Souls Day trip to our partner Unitarian Church in Barót, Transylvania (Romania).
Consider joining Rev. Robin and five other Beacon members who have already signed on for the eight-day trip, from October 29 through November 6, usually a time of blue skies and crisp autumn weather.
In Transylvania as in many parts of Europe, All Souls Day, November 1, is a reunion holiday similar to our Thanksgiving, when people return to their ancestral villages from cities where they have moved for jobs. Beacon visitors will accompany Unitarian families as they visit cemeteries in the late afternoon to place flowers and light candles by the graves of deceased relatives. On the twilight drive back to Barót, the hillsides glow with the candlelight from the small graveyards along the way.
In order to get to know our Unitarian partners better, the Barót congregation warmly invites Beacon members to stay in their homes.
Other activities planned by our hosts include a walking tour around the small town of Barót, visits to traditional craftspeople (woodcarvers and a blacksmith) in nearby villages and a hike in the beautiful Vargyas Gorge.
Rev. Robin will preach at Unitarian services on Sunday, Nov. 4, and afterwards, members of the congregation will have a further chance to get to know the guests at a coffee-hour reception. Travelers will leave for Bucharest on Monday, Nov. 5, and will stay in a motel conveniently near the Otopeni Airport in Bucharest for return flights the next day.
The estimated cost for the trip, $850, includes all meals, overnights and transportation, except for airfare to and from Otopeni Airport in Bucharest. Airfare generally averages about $1,200 round trip, but cheaper flights may be available if you book early.
If you are interested, please get in touch with Rev. Robin or Kate Smith-Cooper (firstname.lastname@example.org). The deadline for signups is September 1.
For questions about the trip, feel free to get in touch with Keith Nier, Lessie Culmer-Nier or Jean Crichton who participated in a similar All Souls Day trip in 2015.
