The World Religions discussion group welcomes anyone interested in learning about and discussing topics that relate to the character or development of various religions. Most often we view and discuss two talks from one of the Great Courses. Our meeting time is on intermittent Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 – 3:00. This fall our schedule will be October 2, 16, and 30, November 13 and 27, and December 11. We will not meet in September.
Currently we are going through The Birth of the Modern Mind: The Intellectual History of the 17th and 18th Centuries by Alan Charles Kors. In May we were introduced to Isaac Newton and the Royal Society (program 8)..
The topics for October 30 will be, first, a general survey of the period of 1680-1715 in which what Kors calls “modern consciousness” starts to become standard among educated Westerners, and second, an introduction to Deism, a radical religious position which challenged all traditional theology throughout the next century.
