April 28th, 2021

Almost a week ago, in honor of Earth day, I (Tuli) vowed to not use any electricity other than what I needed for work (computer, phone). I attended zoom calls only by daylight, the light from the screen lighting my face while darkness rose around me. I had tap water “lukewarm” tea, although it struck me that the water heating element must have some sort of electricity somewhere. Meals were salads, avoiding the stove and the microwave. While I did not shut down the fridge, I ate nothing from it.

These small shifts are not hard to do for a day, perhaps even for a week. Looking back over the past year, it is amazing to me how we have altered our behavior. It was fear that drove that shift: a visceral, palpable fear, immediate and pressing.

What if we were to have the same kind of motivation about race and the climate? What would change for us? What would we do differently?

This Sunday is the final plate collection for our Green Earth Ministry - won’t you join me in giving generously?

With faith and love,
