Reflections on General Assembly 2024 - June 23, 2024

This past week, Unitarian Universalists gathered virtually for the 63rd General Assembly of our denomination. Delegates from each of the congregations considered the new revisions to the Unitarian Universalist Association of congregations bylaws, including revising the 7 principles.

We want to thank our congregational delegates: Marianne Avery, Carolyn Baldachinni, Michi Magee, Mia Morse, Kendall Murano, Kimi Nakata, Janet Roberts, Marty Rothfelder, and Sasha Torres as well as our staff delegates: Jamaine Cripe, Dr. Tuli Patel, and Rev. Robin Tanner. Thank you so much for all your work before General Assembly and the hours in the business sessions reviewing amendments and voting materials.

We are happy to report the revisions to Article 2 passed! A full article describing the multiyear discernment on Article 2 as well as several social actions of immediate witness and an affirmation can be found on the UU World.

In addition to the revisions to Article 2, the General Assembly also passed a business resolution: “Embracing Transgender, Nonbinary, Intersex and Gender Diverse People is a Fundamental Expression of UU Religious Values.” The conversation to pass this business resolution was particularly difficult and challenging. Of note was the affirmation offered by Rev. Jekaren Olaoya who offered to all transgender and nonbinary persons that they are deeply loved.

Over 2,700 delegates participated in this General Assembly which began on Thursday and concluded on Sunday of this past week. General Assembly also included worship services and the Ware Lecture which this year was given by Rabbi Julia Watts Belser who spoke about ableism and inclusion.

Next year’s General Assembly will be held in Baltimore, Maryland. We strongly encourage all interested Beacon members to reach out to Rev. Robin if you are interested in attending. We will be planning early for this year’s in person gathering.
