Ágnes Demeter

My name is Ágnes Demeter. I’m 20 years old and a second-year student at the Protestant Theological Institute in Kolozsvár. I decided to become a minister when I was 14, because I want a job and a career where I can benefit the community, and I think this is the most versatile way to do that.

In my first year, I studied Greek and Hebrew, and now I’m learning Latin. I don’t have what you’d call favorite classes, but I like Universal Church History and Philosophy. When I finish my studies, I would like to be a congregational minister, and I’d also like to work with children and young people.

At Easter, I was sent to help with holiday services in Nagyajta. I preached three consecutive days there. The congregation and the minister’s family were very kind, and I had a great holiday. I made some decorated Easter eggs as a gift for them. Nagyajta is close to Barót, so I was able to spend at least part of the holiday with my family.

Right now I’m living in Kolozsvár in the János Zsigmond Unitarian College, and I like being here. We have had live education this term, although the rate of infection has been high. For that reason, the other universities have remained online. We had a few online classes too, but I don’t like them. For me, it’s more difficult to focus on the lessons and because of this, I have to study more after class.

Unfortunately, there aren’t many social events because of the pandemic, but I try to take advantage of the opportunities. Most of my friends are not in Kolozsvár now, so I don’t get a chance to see them. But we’re trying to get the most out of this year.

My classes will be over at the end of June. I do not have plans for the summer, because everything is so uncertain, but I will probably serve as an intern in one of the Unitarian churches.

My parents send greetings to you in Summit. They are active in Unitarian work. My father is a member of the leading board of our Barót Unitarian church and also lay president of our Unitarian district. My mother, Maria, is president of the Unitarian Women’s Association of Barót. I have two brothers, Gergö who is 16 and little Bendegúz, who is 1 ½. He can walk now and say a few words.

I would like to thank you for this support, which helps cover my costs in Kolozsvár. I wish you all the best. God bless you!
