World Religions Group Fall 2022
During fall 2022, Beacon’s World Religions group will use Zoom to watch and discuss The Power of Myth, a series of televised interviews between Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell, a writer and professor of literature whose subjects of interest included comparative religion and mythology.
The Power of Myth miniseries includes six hour-long episodes, and originally ran on PBS in 1988. Why watch something that first aired 34 years ago, you ask? The Power of Myth was hugely popular during its first release and, while some of us may be encountering it for the second time, it will still offer fertile ground for discussions about mythology, religion, spirituality, and the roles they play in our lives. Some of the ideas discussed in the series that seemed perhaps controversial, perhaps obvious, at the time, may land very differently today. Viewing the series will also give us a chance to reflect on the way our own understandings and beliefs about the world have changed over time. Are you the same person you were in 1988? Are we the same country? Has our culture progressed or regressed since then? All this and more lies in store for us as we begin our next chapter as a group!
All are very welcome. We meet for two hours at 1 PM on intermittent Tuesdays (see below). To get the Zoom link, or for questions, please contact Lessie Culmer-Nier.
