Meet Some Students of Barót as Part of the Partner Church Fundraiser
Meet the university students of Beacon’s Partner Unitarian Church in Barót, Transylvania (Romania), who are receiving scholarships from Beacon’s Partner Church program. They were selected by the Barót church’s Partnership Committee and will be continuing as part of the scholarship program for the next academic year.
The Unitarians of Beacon and Barót have been in an active partnership since 1992. The scholarship program began in 2001, and since then, Beacon has helped a total of 31 Barót university students pay for housing, food, books and travel expenses for their higher education. We have helped the Barót congregation nurture two Unitarian ministers plus doctors, teachers, businessmen and software engineers.
Unfortunately, in 2020, with the Covid crisis, we were able to provide only $400 per student, rather than the $700 we had promised. We hope to resume our full commitment to the $700 scholarship in 2021-2022.
As most long-time members know, the main fundraiser for the Partner Church program has been the annual Pancake Breakfast. For almost two decades, Beaconites packed Fellowship Hall for the annual all-you-can-eat feast of pancakes, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit salad, homemade quiche, home-cured salmon and more. Tickets were a reasonable $20 for adults and $5 for children.
Clearly, this year, an in-person Pancake breakfast is impossible. The Partner Church program has traditionally received the collection plate from the Flower Communion service, and this year, we are asking the congregation to give even more generously than usual. We have set our goal at $6,300, which would provide a $700 scholarship for all nine students.
Please give generously on June 6. All proceeds given that day will go to the Partner Church programs, except for donations earmarked for your pledge. Or consider making a donation today by clicking here.
